The Big Bash League, or BBL, is Australia’s professional men’s Twenty 20 competition, run by Cricket Australia across summer, typically from mid December to late January. Eight city-based teams contest a home and away season followed by finals: the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.
Each match is 20 overs a side. The team batting first sets a target, the team batting second chases it, and the whole thing is usually done in a bit over three hours. That short format is what makes the BBL such a heavily bet competition. Momentum swings quickly, a single over can flip a match and there are dozens of markets on every game.
Perth Scorchers are the most successful club in the league’s history with six titles, most recently in the 2025/26 season, ahead of the Sydney Sixers on three. Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes have two apiece. The Melbourne Stars are the only team to have never won a title.
BBL bet types explained
Head to head
The simplest BBL bet. You back one team to win the match.
If the Scorchers are $1.75 and the Sixers are $2.05, a $50 bet on the Scorchers returns $87.50 if they win. Because chasing is often an advantage in T20, particularly under lights when the ball comes onto the bat, the toss can matter to a head to head price, and the market may move once you know who is batting first.

Total innings runs, over and under
A bet on the runs scored by a single team, typically the team that bats first. The bookmaker sets a number and you back over or under.
If a team’s total is set at 165.5, an over bet needs them to make 166 or more. Pitch and ground are everything here. A quick outfield and a small ground lift totals, while a two-paced pitch that grips can drag them down. The venue tells you more about this market than the teams do.
Top team batter and top team bowler
Top team batter pays if your player scores the most runs for their team in the match. Top team bowler pays if your player takes the most wickets, usually with the best economy as a tiebreaker.
Opening batters are favoured in the top batter market because they have the opportunity to face the most balls, and frontline bowlers who bowl their full four overs are favoured in the top bowler market. Role and how many overs or balls a player is likely to get matter as much as pure ability.
Player runs and player wickets
Set lines on an individual. A batter might have a line at 24.5 runs, a bowler at 1.5 wickets. You back the over or the under. There are also bets for 20+, 30+ 50+ runs for batters, and 1+, 2+ 3+ wickets for bowlers.
Batting position is the key variable for run lines. An opener has far more opportunity than someone batting at seven. For wickets, a death bowler operating at the back end where batters take risks can be more likely to pick up wickets than a powerplay specialist.
Method of dismissal and milestones
T20 carries a long list of novelty and milestone markets: a named batter to score a century, a team to hit a six in the first over, total sixes in the match, the method of the next dismissal, and runs scored in the first six overs of the powerplay.
The powerplay total is a popular one. It is a bet on how many runs a team scores in the first six overs, when fielding restrictions are at their tightest and the batting side is looking to cash in.
Same Game Multi
A Same Game Multi combines several markets from the one match into a single bet at bigger odds.
A typical BBL Same Game Multi might be the Scorchers to win, a named opener as top team batter and a named quick to take two or more wickets. All legs must land for the bet to win.
