What is Online Betting?
Online betting is placing a wager on the outcome of a sporting event or a race through a licensed wagering operator's website or app, rather than at a TAB outlet or with an on-course bookmaker. You open an account, verify who you are, deposit funds and then back a selection at the odds displayed on screen. If your selection wins, the return is credited to your account balance.
In Australia the online wagering market is built on two products that behave quite differently.
Fixed Odds Betting
Fixed odds means the price you take is the price you get. If you back a team at $2.50 and the odds later drift to $3.00, your bet is still settled at $2.50, because the price was locked in the moment your bet was accepted. Nearly all sports betting in Australia works this way, and fixed odds are also available on racing.
The advantage is certainty. You know your exact return before the event starts. The trade-off is that you carry the risk of the market moving in your favour after you've bet.
Pari-mutuel (tote) Betting
Pari-mutuel betting, better known in Australia as tote or TAB betting, works on a pool. Every bet on a race goes into a shared pool, the operator takes a commission, and the remainder is divided among the winning tickets. Because the dividend depends on how much money is on each runner, you don't know your final payout until the race jumps and the pool is settled.
This is why racing punters see products like Best Tote, Middle Tote, Top Fluctuation and Best of the Best. They're derivative products that pay you a dividend based on tote prices or on-course bookmaker fluctuations, rather than a fixed price you locked in earlier.
Racing and Sport
Racing covers thoroughbreds, harness and greyhounds, both Australian and international. It's a high-frequency product with meetings running most days of the year. Sport covers everything from AFL and NRLthrough to NBA, Cricket, Soccer, Tennis and NFL, with markets on the result, the margin, individual player performances and much more.
Mobile and App Betting
The vast majority of Australian bets are now placed on a phone. A modern betting app is far more than a shrunk-down website. It handles push notifications when your race is about to jump, live streaming, bet tracking on your home screen and one-tap deposits through Apple Pay or Google Pay. If you're comparing operators, the app is the product.
Is Online Betting Legal in Australia?
Yes. Betting online with a licensed Australian wagering operator is legal for anyone aged 18 or over. What is regulated is how operators can offer it, and the rules are stricter here than in most markets.
The Legislation
The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 is the federal law that sets the boundaries. It permits licensed operators to offer online wagering on sport and racing, but it prohibits online in-play betting on sports, and it prohibits online casino games, poker and slots. Offshore operators that target Australians without a licence are acting illegally, which is the single biggest reason to only ever bet with an operator licensed in Australia.
Licensing itself is handled at state and territory level. betr holds a Tasmanian licence and are regulated by the Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission. Advertising, inducements and responsible gambling obligations are then layered on top by each state, which is why you'll see different rules for customers in South Australia or New South Wales.
Licensed Bookmakers
A licensed operator is subject to auditing of its wagering systems, must hold customer funds appropriately, must comply with anti-money laundering obligations and must offer the responsible gambling tools mandated by its licence. betr is an Australian company, operates under a Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission license & is listed on the ASX under the ticker BBT. Complaints that can't be resolved with the operator can be escalated to the licensing regulator.
Identity Verification
Australian law requires wagering operators to verify a customer's identity before they can bet. In practice you supply your name, date of birth and address at sign-up, and the operator checks those details electronically against third-party databases. Most customers are verified in seconds. If the electronic check fails, you'll be asked to supply a document such as a driver's licence or passport before your account is activated.
Age Restrictions
Betting is strictly 18 and over. Operators are obliged to take active steps to keep minors out, and if you share a device with someone under 18 you can install filtering software to block gambling sites entirely.
Payment Rules
Credit cards, and digital wallets funded by a credit card, are no longer an accepted deposit method at Australian wagering operators. This is a legislative change, not an operator preference. Debit cards, PayID, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, bank transfer and BPAY all remain available. You can only bet with money you actually have.
How Online Betting Works
From sign-up to withdrawal, the process is the same at every licensed Australian operator. Here it is end to end.
1. Create an account
Sign-up takes about two minutes. You'll provide your name, date of birth, address, email and mobile number, then set a username and password. betr accounts can also be opened over the phone with the customer service team.
2. Verify your identity
This happens at registration, not later. The operator checks your details electronically. If it can't match them, you upload a photo ID. You can't place a bet or withdraw until you're verified.
3. Deposit funds
Debit card, PayID, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay are instant. Bank transfer and BPAY take longer to clear. betr charges no deposit fees and the minimum deposit is $5.
4. Choose a market
Find your race or match, then pick a market. That might be a simple head to head, or something more specific like a player's disposal count or the first try scorer.
5. Place your bet
Tap the odds to add the selection to your betslip, enter a stake, and confirm. The odds shown on the betslip are the odds you'll be settled at once the bet is accepted.
6. Watch it live
On betr you can stream Sky Racing 1 and 2 in the app, follow your Same Game Multi as it updates leg by leg with Live Tracker, and get race reminder notifications before the jump. Want on after the game has started? Call the betr live betting line on 1800 797 558.
7. Withdraw your winnings
Request a withdrawal to a bank account in your own name. betr processes withdrawals multiple times a day, seven days a week. With Rapid Withdrawals, customers whose bank supports fast payments generally see the funds within a few hours, weekends and public holidays included.
Choosing a Betting Site
Every licensed Australian operator offers the same core product, so the differences that matter are in the detail. Five things are worth checking before you open an account anywhere.
Licensing. Confirm the operator holds an Australian licence. If the site can't tell you which regulator licences it, walk away. An offshore book has no obligation to pay you and no Australian regulator to answer to.
Market depth. A head to head price is easy. What separates operators is how deep the card goes: player props, alternative lines, exotics on the racing, and how many legs you can build into a Same Game Multi.
Pricing and market updates. Odds move as team news, injuries, weather and betting activity come in. You want an operator that prices the events you actually follow and updates those prices quickly, so the market in front of you reflects what's just happened.
Withdrawal speed. Depositing is instant everywhere. Getting paid is where operators differ. Look for an operator that processes withdrawals daily and supports fast payments.
Responsible gambling tools. Deposit limits, loss limits, timeouts and self-exclusion should be easy to find and easy to set inside your account, not buried in a help page.
betr was built against exactly that list. Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission licensed and ASX listed, deep markets across racing and sport, our own technology platform rather than a rented one, Rapid Withdrawals seven days a week and responsible gambling controls you can set yourself in a couple of taps.
Sports You Can Bet On
betr is an approved wagering provider for the AFL, NRL, Cricket Australia, Tennis Australia, Basketball Australia, Rugby AU and Netball Australia, with markets across Australian and international sport as well as thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing.
AFL
The biggest betting code in the country. Core markets are the head to head, the line, the total points and the margin. Beyond that sit the player markets that most punters actually build their bets around: disposals, goals, marks, tackles and the Brownlow. Every game carries a Same Game Multi market so you can combine a result with a player's stat line in a single bet. View AFL betting markets.
NRL
Line betting is the default in league because so many games are decided by a converted try or less. Try scorer markets are the code's signature bet, from first try scorer through to anytime try scorer, and Origin brings the deepest markets of the year. View NRL betting markets.
Horse racing
Racing runs almost every day, on thoroughbreds, harness and greyhounds, at metropolitan and provincial meetings around the country plus international cards. You can take fixed odds or a tote-derived product, back a runner each way, or build exotics like the quinella, trifecta, first four and quaddie. View today's racing.
Cricket
Test, one day and T20, plus the Big Bash and international tours. Match result and line are the staples, with top run scorer, top wicket taker, total match runs and method of dismissal adding depth. View cricket betting markets.
Tennis
Tennis runs year round across the four Grand Slams, the Masters events and the tour opens. Markets centre on the match winner, set betting, total games and handicaps. View tennis betting markets.
Soccer
The three-way head to head is unique to soccer. A draw is a real result, so most match markets carry three outcomes rather than two. Beyond that you'll find both teams to score, total goals, corners, cards and goalscorer markets across the Premier League, the Champions League, the A-League and major tournaments. View soccer betting markets.
NBA
Basketball is the deepest player prop market in world sport. Points, rebounds, assists, threes made and combined stat lines are all priced every night of the season, alongside the spread and the total. View NBA betting markets.
American sports
NFL and college football, MLB, NHL and the major US finals series all carry full markets in Australian time slots. View NFL betting markets.
Combat sports and motorsport
UFC and boxing markets cover the outright winner, the method of victory and the round, while Formula 1 and MotoGP carry race winner, podium and head to head driver markets.
Understanding Betting Odds
Odds do two jobs at once. They tell you what a winning bet pays, and they tell you what the bookmaker thinks the chance of that outcome is. Understanding the second job is what separates a punter from a spectator.
Decimal odds
Decimal odds are the Australian standard. The number is your total return, stake included, for every $1 you bet. Odds of $2.50 with a $10 stake return $25, which is $15 profit plus your $10 back. The maths is simply stake × odds = total return.
Fractional odds
Fractional odds are the traditional British format and still show up in racing commentary. They express profit relative to stake. Odds of 3/1 means you win $3 for every $1 staked, so a $10 bet returns $40 in total. To convert fractional to decimal, divide the fraction and add one: 3/1 becomes 4.00, and 5/2 becomes 3.50.
Implied probability
Every price carries an implied probability, and you can calculate it in one step: 1 ÷ decimal odds × 100. Odds of $2.00 imply a 50% chance. Odds of $4.00 imply 25%. This is the number you should actually be arguing with. If you think a team wins 40% of the time and the market is offering $3.00, which implies 33%, you've found value. If you think they win 20% of the time, you haven't.
Expected return
Expected return is what a bet pays if it wins. The table below shows the relationship between price, implied probability and return on a $10 stake.
| Decimal odds | Implied probability | Return on $10 | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1.20 | 83% | $12.00 | $2.00 |
| $1.50 | 67% | $15.00 | $5.00 |
| $2.00 | 50% | $20.00 | $10.00 |
| $3.50 | 29% | $35.00 | $25.00 |
| $5.00 | 20% | $50.00 | $40.00 |
| $10.00 | 10% | $100.00 | $90.00 |
| $21.00 | 4.8% | $210.00 | $200.00 |
Why odds move
Prices are not set once and left alone. They shift constantly in the lead-up to a race or a match as new information arrives: a late team change, an injury, a track downgrade, a weather forecast or a shift in how the market is betting. A team that opens at $2.20 on Monday can easily be $1.85 by Saturday.
This is why fixed odds matter. The price you take is the price you keep, so if you back a runner early and the market firms in behind you, you're settled at the bigger price you locked in. It also means there's a genuine decision to make on timing: take the early price, or wait for the mail and bet closer to the jump.
Popular Bet Types
Win
The simplest bet there is. You back a runner or a team to win. In racing it's a win bet, in sport it's usually called a head to head or a moneyline.
Place
A racing bet that pays if your runner finishes in the placings, normally the first three in fields of eight or more, or the first two in smaller fields. Shorter odds than the win, but a wider net. An each way bet is simply a win bet and a place bet on the same runner, so a $10 each way bet costs $20.
Multi
A multi combines several selections from different events into one bet. The odds are multiplied together, so the potential return climbs fast, but every leg must win. Three legs at $2.00 each is a $8.00 multi. betr accepts multis of two to twelve legs and you can mix racing and sport in the same bet.
Same Game Multi
A multi built entirely from markets inside a single match. Covered in detail below.
Same Race Multi
The racing equivalent. Combine two or more runners in the same race to win, or to finish top 2, top 3 or top 4, and get a multi price for the combination. betr allows up to four legs in a Same Race Multi.
Over/Under
A bet on a total rather than a result. The bookmaker sets a number, such as 168.5 points in an AFL match, and you bet on whether the actual total will finish above or below it. The half point exists to remove the possibility of a tie.
Line and handicap
Line betting handicaps the favourite to bring the market back to roughly even money. If a team is priced at -6.5 on the line, they need to win by seven or more for your bet to land. Back the other side at +6.5 and you win if they lose by six or fewer, or win outright.
Margin
Pick the winning margin, usually in bands such as 1 to 12 points, 13 to 24 points or 25 plus. Longer odds than the head to head because you're calling both the winner and the scale of the win. Available on AFL, rugby league, rugby union and basketball.
Player props
A bet on an individual's performance rather than the team's result. Disposals in the AFL, run metres in the NRL, points and rebounds in the NBA, runs and wickets in cricket. betr also runs StatWars, a player prop product that pits two players head to head on a chosen statistic.
First try scorer
The signature NRL market. Back a player to score the very first try of the match. Anytime try scorer is the safer sibling at shorter odds, paying if your player crosses at any stage.
Quaddie
A racing exotic requiring you to pick the winner of four nominated races at a meeting, usually the last four. You can take multiple runners in each leg, and Flexi Betting lets you take a percentage of the full outlay so a large combination stays affordable.
Trifecta
Pick the first three runners home in the correct order. Related exotics include the quinella (first two in any order), the exacta (first two in the correct order) and the first four (top four in exact order).
Parlays
Parlay bets, sometimes called multiple method bets, cover every combination within a group of selections. A Lucky 15 covers four selections across fifteen bets, including four singles, so you get a return even if only one leg lands. Trixie, Patent, Yankee, Lucky 31 and Super Yankee all work on the same principle at different scales.
Cash Out
Cash Out lets you settle a bet before the event has finished, taking a return based on how the bet is tracking. If your multi has four legs home and one to go, Cash Out gives you the option of banking a certain profit rather than sweating the last leg. The Cash Out value moves with the event, so it goes up as your bet firms and down as it drifts. It's available on selected racing and sports singles and fixed odds multis, and on some live events.
Live Betting
Live betting, also called in-play betting, is placing a bet after an event has already started. The game has kicked off, the momentum has shifted, and you want on. You can absolutely do that with betr, and it takes one phone call.
How to place a live bet with betr
Under Australian law, licensed operators take in-play sports bets by telephone rather than through an app or a website. So when a match is already underway, you call the betr live betting line on 1800 797 558, tell the operator the market you want, and the bet is placed and confirmed on the call. The line is open 24/7 for members, it covers racing, sport and live events, and the minimum telephone stake is $20.
It's worth having that number in your phone before the weekend. Live markets move fast, and the punters who get the price they want are the ones who don't have to go looking for the number at the moment they need it.
Watch and track it live in the app
While the game is running, the betr app keeps you across it. Live Tracker puts the score, the game clock and every leg of your Same Game Multi on your home screen, so you can follow the bet without even opening the app. Sky Racing 1 and 2 stream live in-app, with race replays afterwards, and Cash Out is available on some live events if you'd rather bank a return than ride it out.
Racing works a little differently. A race has a fixed start time, so betting stays open right up until the jump and then closes. Get on before they jump, then watch it live on Sky.
Same Game Multis
A Same Game Multi combines two or more markets from the same match into a single bet. Rather than backing four different games, you build one bet around one game: the result, the total points, a player's disposals and a goal scorer, all in the one betslip.
Why the price isn't a straight multiplication
This is the part most punters get wrong. A standard multi multiplies the odds of independent events. A Same Game Multi can't do that, because the legs are related. If you back a team to win by 40 points and you also back their star forward to kick four goals, those two outcomes are correlated. One makes the other more likely.
So the pricing engine reprices the combination based on how the legs interact. Correlated legs come in shorter than a straight multiplication would suggest. Legs that pull against each other, such as backing a low total and a high individual score, can come out longer. The upshot is that a Same Game Multi price can be bigger or smaller than the equivalent standard multi, and it depends entirely on the legs you've chosen.
How to build one
- Open a match with a Same Game Multi market available.
- Add your legs. betr allows up to twelve legs in a single Same Game Multi.
- Watch the price update as each leg is added. It recalculates every time.
- Enter your stake and confirm.
- Follow it live with Live Tracker as each leg settles.
The obvious warning applies. Every additional leg lowers your chance of collecting, and a twelve-leg Same Game Multi at long odds is a long shot by design. The price is big because the outcome is unlikely.
Betting Promotions Explained
Australian advertising rules restrict how wagering operators can promote offers, and they prohibit inducements to open an account. This section explains what the common promotion types actually are and how they work, rather than promoting any specific offer. Any promotion available to you will appear in your account, and every offer carries its own terms and conditions worth reading before you opt in.
Bonus bets
A bonus bet is a stake credited to your account that you can place on a market of your choosing. The critical difference from cash is that the stake is not returned if the bet wins. Back a $50 bonus bet at $3.00 and a winner pays you $100 in cash, not $150, because the original $50 was never yours to begin with. Bonus bets usually carry an expiry date and can't be withdrawn.
Deposit matches
The operator matches a percentage of a deposit with bonus funds. These almost always come with turnover requirements, meaning you have to bet through the bonus a certain number of times before any resulting balance can be withdrawn. Read the turnover multiple before you accept.
Money back offers
A refund on a losing bet under defined conditions. In racing that's typically a runner that finishes second, or a runner that's scratched. In sport it might be a multi where a single leg lets you down. The refund is usually returned as a bonus bet rather than cash, and it's normally capped.
Early payouts and protest payouts
An early payout settles your bet as a winner before the event is finished, when a defined trigger is hit. A protest payout pays out a horse that finishes first and is subsequently relegated on protest. Both are conditional, and both are defined in the offer terms.
Before you opt in. Every promotion has its own terms and conditions, and they're where the detail lives: eligibility, expiry dates, maximum stakes, whether a return comes back as cash or as a bonus bet, and any turnover requirement attached. Read them before you take up an offer, and only ever bet an amount you're comfortable losing.
Choosing the Best Betting App
The app is where you'll spend all of your time, so it's worth judging operators on the features that actually affect your experience rather than on the noise. Here's what to weigh, and why each one matters.
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Speed | Odds move. A slow app means the price is gone by the time your bet is confirmed, particularly close to a jump or a bounce. |
| Cash Out | Gives you the option to settle a bet early and manage your position rather than riding every bet to the finish. |
| Live streaming | Watching the race or match you've backed, in the same app you bet in, without a second screen. |
| Same Game Multi | The flexibility to build a bet around one match rather than spreading across events you don't care about. |
| Fast deposits | PayID, Apple Pay and Google Pay land instantly. Waiting on a bank transfer while the market closes is a bad experience. |
| Withdrawal speed | Getting paid quickly is the clearest signal an operator respects your money. |
| Security | An Australian licence, verified accounts and withdrawals paid only to an account in your own name. |
| Responsible gambling tools | Limits and timeouts you can set yourself, in-app, without calling anyone. |
How betr addresses these
betr runs on its own technology platform rather than licensing a third-party one, which is why the app moves quickly and why features tend to ship rather than sit on a roadmap. Cash Out is available on selected singles and fixed odds multis. Sky Racing 1 and 2 stream in the app, with race replays and a Live Tracker that follows your bets from the home screen. Same Game Multi runs up to twelve legs and Same Race Multi up to four. Deposits through PayID, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and debit card are instant and fee free, and Rapid Withdrawals get funds back to eligible bank accounts within hours. Deposit limits, loss limits and self-exclusion are all available inside your account.
Put the field through that checklist and betr holds up on every line of it: quick to bet, deep on markets, instant to deposit, rapid to pay out, Australian licensed and Australian staffed. Open an account in two minutes and see it for yourself.
Responsible Gambling
For most people betting is entertainment. For some it stops being that. The tools below exist because gambling harm is real, and every one of them is free, immediate and available inside your account.
Deposit limits
Set a maximum amount you can deposit over a 24 hour, 7 day, 14 day or 30 day period. Once you hit the limit, no further deposits are accepted until the period rolls over. A new or reduced limit takes effect immediately.
Loss limits
Set a maximum net loss over the same periods. If you start a week with $500 and set a $100 weekly loss limit, betting stops once your balance drops to $400.
The cooling off period
Making a limit more restrictive takes effect straight away. Making a limit less restrictive, or removing it, is subject to a seven day cooling off period. That delay is deliberate. It stops a limit being lifted in the heat of a losing run.
Timeouts and taking a break
You can self-exclude from betr for 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. During that period you can't log in or make changes to your account. It's found under My Details, in the Take a Break or Close Account section.
Self-exclusion
Self-exclusion can be temporary or permanent, and it can be applied at three levels.
- With one operator. Apply it in your account, or ask the customer service team to apply it for you.
- Across Northern Territory licensed operators. The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission runs a multi-operator self-exclusion scheme covering every wagering operator licensed in the NT, which is most Australian corporate bookmakers.
- Across every licensed Australian operator. That's BetStop.
BetStop
BetStop is the National Self-Exclusion Register. It's free, it's run by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, and it excludes you from every licensed Australian online and phone wagering operator in a single step. You choose the length, from a minimum of three months through to a lifetime exclusion. Once you're registered, operators must close your account and stop marketing to you. Register at betstop.gov.au.
Reality checks and activity statements
Every licensed operator provides a monthly activity statement showing what you deposited, what you bet and what you won or lost. It's worth actually reading. Your full transaction and betting history is also available in your account at any time, under My Account, and it's the most honest reality check available. Most people remember their wins more clearly than their losses. The statement doesn't.
Getting help
If gambling is causing you or someone close to you distress, free and confidential support is available 24 hours a day.
- Gambling Helpline: 1800 858 858, any time, from anywhere in Australia.
- Gambling Help Online for chat, email and self-help resources.
- Gamblers Anonymous Australia for peer support meetings.
- betr's responsible gambling information and self-assessment tools.
Signs worth taking seriously: betting more than you planned to, chasing losses, borrowing to bet, hiding your betting from people close to you, or betting to escape stress rather than for enjoyment. If any of that sounds familiar, use the tools above today rather than after the next bet.
