This week’s headline play is Omni Man in the Champions Stakes, with 3 units for the place at $2.80 and 0.5 units to win at $12. Joliestar is our pick in the Champions Sprint at 1.3 units at $4.80. Pinhole, Hankee Alpha, Yesspecially and Donatello share top billing in our Traders’ Best Bets at 2.5 units each. The Champions Mile is a no-bet for our traders this week.

Champions Day rounds out the Melbourne Cup Carnival for another year, and some elite horse flesh will be on show with three Group 1s to be run and won. Let’s take a look at the feature races and find some winners across the day.

Feature Races

Flemington

VRC Champions Sprint – Flemington – 1200m G1

Tempted just about the headline horse of the day fresh off knocking off Ka Ying Rising in the Everest. $1.80 in early markets, which looks justified having not been beaten for over a year and just in the zone this preparation. Every chance again and drawn the right part of the track. With that said, I think the bet in the race is Joliestar who got very close to her in the Everest and drawn perfectly to stalk from 10. Boasts straight track experience over Tempted and gets last look with McDonald, primed third up. At the prices, I’ll lean her way. These two clear out ratings wise but if there’s a blow out it could be Skybird who is absolutely airborne. The inside draw is a negative but some predicted rain on the day enhances her chances. Backing Joliestar to topple the favourite.

Joliestar @ $4.80 (1.3 Units)

VRC Champions Mile – Flemington – 1600m G1

All about Autumn Glow and she’ll win again at the mile. Best horse in the country at the moment and it will be good to see her strut her stuff at Flemington. Tom Kitten going really well and most likely candidate for the exacta. Lindermann seemingly does not go in Melbourne, and the rest are lengths off them. Just watching.

Champions Stakes – Flemington – 2000m G1

Aeliana $3-$2.50 in early betting which looks unders for mine. She was ok in the Cox Plate but that is now seven starts in Melbourne for just one win and I don’t think she should be as dominant a favourite as she is. Super prep for Cosmic Crusader who continues to run through brick walls. Can win again but likely last here in run from the wide draw. Sir Delius I don’t think is going any good, nor is the stable for that matter and couldn’t have him. Birdman and Omni Man were the two that interested me from a betting perspective. Birdman gets the suck run from the inside draw and will just need the splits at the right time. Omni Man was super in his Australian debut hitting the line in a fast run race at Geelong with the form already franked. Dropping back to 2000m I don’t mind out of a fast run race. Think it’s a tough race but going to have something on Omni Man win and place.

Omni Man @ $12.00 (0.5 Units)

Omni Man (Place) @ $2.80 (3 Units)

Traders’ Best Bets

Flemington Race 3 – Pinhole

I thought he would have run a nice race in the Cup if he got in. Zero luck last time out and drawn kinder here to blend in at the right time in a race where they should run along.

Pinhole @ $3.10 (2.5 Units)

Flemington Race 4 – Hankee Alpha

Never clear last week drawn in the wrong part of the track. Stands side draw now and can attain.

Hankee Alpha @ $3.00 (2.5 Units)

Flemington Race 5 – Too Darn Discreet

Going well this prep without winning. Some weight relief now and love Zahra going aboard. Think starts favourite.

Too Darn Discreet @ $4.40 (1.5 Units)

Rosehill Race 1 – Yesspecially and Brave Xena

This looks a race in two and playing accordingly. Yesspecially impressive in both starts and trialled like a jet. Brave Xena no luck this preparation but draws a gate and will be strong.

Yesspecially @ $3.20 (2.5 Units)

Brave Xena @ $6.50 (1 Unit)

Rosehill Race 4 – Donatello

Just a bridge too far last start settling too far off them in a muddling affair. Out to 1800m on the quick back up and ready to win.

Donatello @ $2.90 (2.5 Units)

Rosehill Race 6 – Sharjawiyah and Toytown

Plenty of unknowns here in a two-year-old race worth a million but these were the two from the trials I liked. Don’t like the race the favourite comes out of so looking for the debutants.

Sharjawiyah @ $6.50 (1 Unit)

Toytown @ $10.00 (0.6 Units)

Rosehill Race 8 – Declichy Boulevard

Airborne and looks the one advantaged out to 1800m. Maps good from the draw and can win again.

Declichy Boulevard @ $4.20 (1.6 Units)

Rosehill Race 10 – Nitro

Comfortably the horse with the most talent in this race, just an absolute nutcase. If he keeps his manners in check and the track is playing to those running on, he can blouse them.

Nitro @ $4.80 (1.3 Units)

Running Total: +10.7 Units (Out 236.05 / In 246.75)
