The final Group One of the Melbourne Cup Carnival always provides an open field and this year is no different with a number of winning hopes lining up, including Melbourne Cup runner Magic Wand. The race has a prestigious honour board with past winners including Lonhro, Rogan Josh and So You Think. The race is held over a distance of 2000 metres under Weight-For-Age conditions.

Natural leader Gailo Chop will look to track across to the fence from an outside draw with Hartnell and Fifty Stars looking to tuck in behind having drawn just inside. Melody Belle has drawn awkwardly in barrier sixteen while Harlem maps to get an easy run from an inside draw.

In what will be his final race in the Godolphin Blue before his retirement, Hartnell still presents a winning chance in the Mackinnon Stakes. Two starts back at this track and distance ran less than a length to the winner in third and while he hasn’t been in the winner’s circle since the 2018 Epsom Handicap he can still run a race her.

Doesn’t have the recent form of some of the other horses in this race but his three starts for two wins at this track and distance – and both in Group One company. Draws barrier three and will more than likely get a great run in transit.

Produced arguable the run of the day to salute in the Empire Rose Stakes last start and is already a winner of ten Group One Races. Won at this distance two starts back so no issues with the distance and will look to cement herself as one of New Zealand’s greatest racing exports.

BLUEY’S PICK
