OVERVIEW

The Kennedy Oaks is the major 3-year-old staying event for fillies during the Flemington Carnival. The Oaks carries great prestige and is one of the highlights of the Melbourne Cup carnival. With many of the fillies unraced at a genuine staying distance the race always makes for great intrigue. The likes of Miami Bound, Vegas Jewel and Moonlight look the main chances this year but there is always the chance for an upset, as was shown in 2016 through tearaway winner Lasqueti Spirit.

SPEED MAP

A little bit like the Melbourne Cup, there doesn’t seem to be a tonne of pace in this race, especially with the scratching of Apicius. Ocean Miss will likely lead them out from one of the wider barriers along with Gamay and perhaps Miami Bound. We might see some changes in tactics however, as we saw with Lasqueti Spirit a couple of years ago.

KEY RUNNERS

  1. MIAMI BOUND ($3.50)

Starting to put together an impressive overall record with 3 wins from just the six starts. Last start won by a neck in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes, defeating Vegas Jewel who lines up here again. The start prior to that had tempo against her and overraced early but still managed to finish a reasonable distance from the winner and also Warning, who took out the Derby on Saturday. Looks a deserving early favourite.

    1. GAMAY ($6)

Last start took out the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes, defeating Vegas Jewel (as Miami Bound did) in her first start at 2000m. Start prior to that was wide throughout but still finished within 1.25L of the talented Celestial Falls. Looks to get a great run on speed and a great chance at value.

      1. VEGAS JEWEL ($4.40)

Talented horse who opened her career with two strong wins before making the jump to 2000m where she met the previous two horses who both managed to defeat her. That’s no knock on her form however, as she was only narrowly defeated both times and could easily be undefeated in her career. Draws wide here and will have a bit to do but looks another great chance.

        BLUEY’S PICK

        1. GAMAY ($6)

I think the winner will come from the top four in the market, however I’m siding with Gamay who looks to get a very cosy run on the speed. With a distinct lack of pace in this race I think this filly looks a great chance to take out the Oaks this year.
