I’m going with Louie the Legend from the Busuttin/Young yard. The stable seems to have a big opinion of this horse and they are desperate to get him into the derby. He ran fourth behind Extra Brut in the UCI Stakes a couple of weeks ago.

I think he has continued to improve throughout the preparation and despite drawing a shocking barrier, I think he will be in the money.

John Sargent’s Home Ground also deserves some respect. He ran eighth in the Spring Champion Stakes where he gave the field a significant start and ran into trouble on a heavily rain affected track but still managed to make up some ground.

The High Chaparrals are flying at the moment and I think he could also be in the money.

Tip: Louie the Legend $8/$2.75 & Home Ground $10/$3.30

Bet Now

International raider Withhold is the clear favourite in the race despite not having any form over 2400m. I would say this race is more to bring him on for the Melbourne Cup, but he is a talented horse in England and deserves respect.

I think Wall of Fire from the Maher/Eustace team is the best roughie of the race. This will be his third run in, so he will be at peak fitness and I thought he ran on well in the St Leger on a bog track behind Big Blue.

Darren Weir’s Yogi is another horse who is on the up and wouldn’t surprise if he were to win. He has little weight and doesn’t mind a soft track so he could go all the way and get into the Cup.

Tip: Wall of Fire place – $5.50, Yogi $6/$2.25

Bet Now

Shanghai Patrol, trained by Matthew Dale, is the clear favourite and rightly so. He has won two in a row, one on a heavy track which is what they will get on Wednesday.

He is far better in the weights than the other two who have been firmly backed and weight makes a big difference on heavy ground.

My only concern is drawing barrier two as he will likely be caught on the fence and that’s where the worst part of a wet track is but it’s only the third race of the day, so it shouldn’t be too chopped up by then.

The top two weighted horses, Tamarack and Ilwendo, deserve respect but they’re giving up too much weight for me.

Tip: Shanghai Patrol $2.65 Win

Geelong R7 – Geelong Cup
