About The Golden Rose Race

The Golden Rose is the first 3-year-old Group 1 race during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. It often provides a good indicator as to how 3-year-olds are performing ahead of the Caulfield Guineas, Thousand Guineas and Coolmore Stud Stakes which take place later on in the Spring.

The race is held at Rosehill Racecourse over a distance of 1400m with a capacity field of 18 runners. The race generally attracts the top 3-year-olds of the season and despite its prestigious nature, the race has failed to attract a capacity field in recent years. The Golden Rose has a prize purse of $1 million.

History of The Golden Rose

The Golden Rose was first run in 1978, but is a relatively new Group 1 race, with its first running at the top level coming in 2009. It was formerly known as the Peter Pan Stakes, named after the dual Melbourne Cup winner but was renamed as the Golden Rose in 2003.

The race has proved to be a good form reference, with many winners including; Epaulette, Duporth, Forensics and Paratroopers all going on to win further Group 1 glory.
