About the Caulfield Cup<\/h2>\n

The Group 1 Caulfield Cup is the richest turf race in the world over a mile-and-a-half and each year shapes as one of the top staying races of the Spring Carnival<\/a>. Run under handicap conditions, the Cup is run at Caulfield Racecourse each year over a distance of 2400m, with horses qualifying via a ballot system. Horses can gain automatic qualification to the race by winning key lead up races, the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes, the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes or the Listed Mornington Cup.<\/p>\n

The race has a capacity of 18 runners, with 4 emergencies also entered in the case that a runner should pull out. The runners compete for a prize pool of $5 Million with the winner taking home $3 Million.<\/p>\n

History of the Caulfield Cup<\/h2>\n

The race was first run in 1879 and was initially run in the Autumn until a decision was made to move the Cup to the Spring Carnival. The Cup has seen some of the great champion stayers take the mantle, including Rising Fast, Northerly, Galilee, Let\u2019s Elope and Might & Power. Only 6 horses have won the Cup twice.<\/p>\n
