About the NRL Grand Final

The NRL Grand final is one of Australia’s major sporting events. 26 rounds make up the season and three weeks of finals footy follows and on Grand Final day only two teams are left.

Around three million Aussies watch it on TV and traditionally 82,000 ticket holders make their way to Sydney’s ANZ Stadium to see who’ll take home the Provan-Summons trophy.

The NRL Grand Final had traditionally been played on Sunday afternoons until the year 2000. In 2001 the game shifted to an evening start. In 2008 a compromise was reached between official broadcaster Nine Network’s preferred starting time of 7 pm and the traditional starting time of 3 pm, with the Grand Final beginning at 5 pm AEDT. In 2013 the evening start resumed, the match commencing at 7:15 pm

At the end of the Grand Final there is a presentation ceremony where the winning team are awarded premiership rings. The player judged to be the man-of-the-match by the Australian national team selectors is awarded the prestigious Clive Churchill Medal.

In the last few years we’ve seen some historic feats in the Grand Final. In 2014, the Rabbitohs ended their long time premiership drought, winning the title for the first time in 43 years. In 2015, we saw one of the greatest matches in Grand Final history when North Queensland beat the Broncos in Golden Point extra time after Johnathan Thurston failed to convert from the side line on the buzzer. And in 2016 we saw the Cronulla Sharks claim their first ever premiership since having entered the comp in 1967.

The Sydney Roosters are the current premiers having claimed back-to-back premierships in 2018-19. No team has ever won three premierships in a row, a feat the Roosters will be out to conquer in season 2020.
